20 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Shotgun with Ejectors

20 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Shotgun

Here’s a tough shotgun to find, not because of its gauge or grade, but because of its condition. Twenty-gauge Fox Serlingworths are easy to track down. But how often do you see one that’s almost new?

A.H. Fox introduced Sterlingworths in 1910 and made them until 1946. Sterlingworths were the lowest-grade, least expensive double the company offered, and even though they were far from the cheapest side-by-sides on the American market, they were incredible deals. Hunters and shooters realized this, bought up thousands of them, and made the Sterlingworth Fox’s most successful model.

This Sterlingworth is a later gun, with the cyanide-applied case colors on the action and canoe-paddle stock typical of models in A.H. Fox’s later Savage era. The Savage Arms Co. bought A.H. Fox in November of 1929, and they went on to make changes to the Sterlingworths as a way to cut production costs.

PARKER- CHE .410ga. -

PARKER- CHE .410ga. -

Could this be the finest .410 Parker in existence? Perhaps. It’s a CHE (Quality 4) and Connecticut Shotgun just listed it on Gunsinternational.com.

Parker introduced their C-grade guns in 1875. They were never very popular, and the company built fewer than 1,900 C-grades in all (1,673 were hammerless modles, or CHs). Very few of these CHs were .410s – fewer than a dozen, I bet.

According to the book American & British .410 Shotguns, the late Bill Jaqua thought Parker .410 CHE No. 241429 (28″ bbls, single trigger, beavertail forend, capped pistol grip, vent rib) was most likely  “…the finest Parker .410 shotgun know to exist…” Judging pics of #241429 in that book, this gun is crisper and more original.

J.P. Sauer - Model 45 - 12g SxS Shotgun

J.P. Sauer – Model 45 – 12g SxS Shotgun

J.P. Sauer and Son is one of the world’s oldest gunmakers. Founded in 1751, they’ve been building all sorts of guns for a long time now. Some of these guns have been beautiful side-by-side shotguns.

The side-by-side shotgun you see here was probably made for the American market between 1910-1930. I love the scalloped action and relieved fences, and the engraving looks fantastic. Overall, it’s  very reflective of the kind of high quality that used to come out of Germany.

Outfits like Sloan’s and Von Lengerke & Detmold used to retail doubles like out of their sporting goods stores in New York City. This was probably an an upper-middle grade Sauer double back then — not the very best, but far from the bottom. It looks beautifully made ,and I’m sure it was quite expensive in its day.

Ugartechea Upland Classic in 16 Gauge

Ugartechea Upland Classic in 16 Gauge

I don’t pay a ton of attention to Spanish shotguns. Not that I have anything against them. Many Spanish doubles are well made, and some of them are bargains. I think this 16 gauge SxS by Ugartechea is both.

Ugartechea has been around since 1922 — a long time for a Spanish gunmaker — and today they build everything from basic boxlocks to fancy, Holland-pattern sidelocks.

The Upland Classic is a model imported by Lion Country Supply. It’s basic, Anson & Deeley pattern boxlock and it comes in a number of grades (I think this is a Grade 2). New, a Grade 2 in 16g is a $1999. The one here looks pretty much new and it costs $400 less — money you can put towards a hunting trip.

12g Fox Sterlingworth "Trap" with true 32" barrels

12g Fox Sterlingworth “Trap” with true 32″ barrels

The Fox Sterlingworth was one of the most popular American doubles of all time. From 1910 to about 1940, A.H. Fox and then the Savage Arms Company built around 140,000 of these great side-by-side shotguns to shooters throughout North America. Most were “Standard” or “Field” guns. A few were true Sterlingworth “Trap” guns.

First offered in 1913, the Sterlingworth “Trap” gun wasn’t a grade. It was just the company’s designation for a heavy 12g, 16g, or 20g Sterly with 32″ bbls & full chokes. Ejectors were available as an option.

12g Fox Sterlingworth “Trap” with true 32″ barrels: Good original case color. Gun is tight with top lever well right of center. Mirror bores as original. Right at .725 with 43/1000 choke (extra full). Left also at .725 with 41/1000 choke (extra full). Chambers at 2 5/8″. Extractors. Auto safety. Weight of gun is 7 LBS 8 OZ. MERKEL PRE-WAR PARAGON GRADE 2 BARREL SET 20 GAUGE

MERKEL PRE-WAR PARAGON GRADE 2 BARREL SET 20 GAUGE

Here’s one of the finest German O/Us I’ve ever seen. It’s a sidelock Merkel Paragon, made in 1928 and ordered for an American through A.F. Stoeger’s in New York City. I spotted this shotgun at the Orvis Game Fair Show a couple weekends ago.

The gun is built on Merkel 303-style action with Double Kersten locks and double underbites and removable sidelocks with a concealed lever release (the lever is the round thing you can see behind the gold inlays in the pic to the right).  It was an awesome, and I couldn’t believe how well it handled. Absolutely stunning.

This Merkel changed hands between dealers at the show, and now it looks like it’s sold. I think the price was close to $60,000 — a ton of money, but not that much when you consider what you’re getting: one of the finest and most unusual over-unders you’ll ever find, at any price.

Charles Daly Prussian O/U 12 Gauge - F.W. Heym

Charles Daly Prussian O/U 12 Gauge – F.W. Heym

Here’s a beautiful, high-quality shotgun you rarely see: It’s a 12 gauge Charles Daly O/U made in Prussia by F. W. Heym. It’s on Gunbroker.com now and the online auctions ends on Sat, 10/18/2014, @ 12:46:55 AM ET.

Charles Daly was an importer, not a maker, and his company had doubles built in Europe for the American market. Charles Daly side-by-sides are famous for their high quality, and this O/U looks like it’s just as well made. It’s a boxlock with sideplates. It was built in the 1920s, right when Charles Daly first offered O/Us. In its day, it was a very expensive shotgun — $500. At the same time, you could buy a Charles Daly Diamond Quality side-by-side  for $450, an A.H. Fox DE for $256.60, and Parker CHE for around $220.

Charles Daly Prussian O/U 12 Gauge – F.W. Heym: This Charles Daly Prussian O/U 12 Gauge has been owned by the same family since its original purchase and is in very good condition. The pictures speak for themselves and I will answer any questions to the best of my ability. The length of pull is 14.5″ from front trigger to end of recoil pad, and 13.5″ from the rear trigger to end of recoil pad. (Correction) Barrels are 28″. Weight is 7 lbs. (Analog scale so this isn’t exact). Gun features shell extractors and safety lever. Choke is tapered, with bore diameter at muzzle being 18mm (perhaps just a hair under).

Ruger Red Label O/U, 28 GA, 28" bbls, English Stock

Ruger Red Label O/U, 28 GA, 28″ bbls, English Stock

Here’s a chance to get a great deal on one of the best upland guns America has ever made. Ruger’s Red Label O/Us tend to be clunky and a bit cumbersome in 12g & 20g. But the 28 gauge models are a different beast altogether. Light & lively, they are one of the handiest O/Us you’ll ever find, and absolutely deadly on grouse & woodcock.

This one has all the hard-to-find features that I like to see, too: Straight, English-style stock with nice figure in it, 28″ barrels, and all it’s accessories. It’s even in it’s original case. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends on Monday, 11/3/2014, @ 1:57:57 PM ET.

BTW: Ruger introduced the Red Label in 1977 and made them until 2011. They reintroduced them this year, but only in 12 & 20 gauge. I hope the company will come out with an updated 28 gauge in the near future.

BARREL LENGTH: 28”

CAPACITY: 2 rounds

FINISH: Blued/SS

SIGHTS/OPTICS: Single front bead

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: You are bidding on a VERY nice, and very clean Ruger Red Label over and under shotgun chambered in 28 gauge with an English stock. The gun comes with the original box and paperwork, as well as 5 choke tubes (Full, modified, improved cylinder, and two skeet). The gun is in exceptional condition, with no noticeable imperfections to speak of. Upon close inspection, there are two very small indentations in the wood, but they are very hard to find. If this gun was used, it was not used much, that is for sure. Overall, I would rate this gun in 98% condition, but that is my opinion, please look at all the pictures and rate the gun for yourself.

Charles Daly Model 500 side by side Miroku 20 Gauge shotgun.

Charles Daly Model 500 side by side Miroku 20 Gauge shotgun.

Here’s the perfect double for anyone new to upland hunting — or anyone looking for a deal. This Charles Daly/ Miroku Model 500 20 Gauge is on Gunbroker.com now. It’s a NO RESERVE auction, ending 11/9/2014 3:58:13 PM ET.

The Charles Daly Model 500 is a very basic side-by-side. But basic doesn’t  mean cheap. It just means you’re getting a lot of quality for very little money. Miroku made Charles Daly’s shotguns from 1967 to 1976, and the one you see here cost around $150 in 1968. The Model 500 was made on the classic Anson & Deeley action. It came in 12  & 20 gauge with 26″, 28″, or 30″ bbls (chopperlump bbls, btw). All 20 gauges had 3″ chambers.

8 gauge Parker PH Side-by-Side shotgun

8 gauge Parker PH Side-by-Side shotgun

There are two types of side-by-side shotguns that always thrill guys: The small ones (28s & .410s) and the big ones–like the eight gauge Parker you see here.

Eight gauges use to be used to pass shoot ducks, geese, and swans, and in the 19th century they were popular with shooters hunting along the big flyways up and down the Eastern Seaboard. In the 20th century, they fell out of favor and were eventually outlawed by the Federal Government for use on all migratory species. Today, some states allow you to use on other game species (like turkeys), while others have completely outlawed their use for hunting. Oh well.

Of all the major American makers, Parker made the most 8s – around 246 in all.  According to the book The Parker Story, the first one was #4360, a D-grade underlever made in 1870s, and the last one was #174065, a DH made around 1916 with 36″ barrels. Lefever made some 8s, too, and so did L.C. Smith, but in small numbers – Lefever may have turned out 40 or so (including this nice E grade) and L.C. Smith made around 35 (including this one).

8 gauge Parker PH Side-by-Side shotgun: Ser. No. 152883. 36″ Twist barrels on a No. 6 frame. Bores are mint- lots of finish- wt.- 13 lbs. 10 ozs. A great hard to find Parker in this condition.

Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F

Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F

I’ve raved about Webley & Scott’s Model 700 shotguns a bunch of times. Rugged and dependable, the M700 was introduced in the 1950s as an entry-level shotgun and it went of to become one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made. While 12 gauge Model 700s are easy to find, 16 gauges are not. The one you see here is on Gunbroker.com now and the auction ends on 11/16/2014 3:07:58 PM ET.

The Brits were never big fans of 16s. But here in the US, a small number of upland hunters have preferred them. Sixteens tend to weigh less than twelves, and they push more than enough lead to drop any grouse, woodcock, or quail.

Webley & Scott model 700E 16ga M/F: Scarce 16 gauge English shotgun by Webley and Scott Birminham England. Gun is 98% original finishes, tight as the day it was made. Nice color case frame and perfect dent free barrels with bright bores. Factory marked 2 3/4 chambers proofed for 3 1/4 tons ejectors are timed and work flawlessly. Wood is a nice grade of English walnut, double triggers 14 1/2 over checkered but. 1 3/8 comb 2 1/8 heal. slight cast for right hand shooter. Auto safety 6lbs-1/4 oz Chokes are .011/.035 both bores are .662.

Beretta BL-3 - 28ga, Over Under, 2-3/4", 28":

Beretta BL-3 – 28ga, Over Under, 2-3/4″, 28″:

The twenty-eight gauge is one shotgun I’ve never talked myself into buying. But after seeing this one, I’ve been having the 28g-talk with myself again. This little Beretta is an awfully nice looking, and the BL-3s are super all around doubles. I doubt I’ll run across another one like it with 28″ barrels. Pistol-grip aren’t usually for me, but on a gun this light, I bet the extra wood gives you a little more control over things going on at the other end of the gun.

From what I’ve heard, the 28g has a lot going for it. Loaded with 3/4-oz shells, they deliver more than enough lead to put down a grouse or woodcock, provided you put the lead in the right place.

McIntosh said the 3/4 oz., 28g is “…one of the most balistically efficient shotshells ever devised” when loaded with hard shot and pushed along by a quality shot cup. He knew a lot more about balistics than I ever will, so I’ll have to agree.

Beretta BL-3 – 28ga, 2-3/4″, 28″: M / F (.020 / .025), Extractors, SST, LOP 14-1/4″, Drop 1-1/2″ to 2-1/2″, Weight 5 lbs. 15 oz. Hard to find gun with 28″ barrels! Great 28ga Dove Gun! Nice Tight Gun – Lever to Right of Center, Tight to Open. Wood shows some handling marks and scratches. Metal 97%. Wood 93%. Price: $1,675

Amoskeag Auctions two-day November sale starts tomorrow, 11/22, 2014 @ 9am. There are a number of nice looking guns in this auction  – from a slew of rare American-made bolt rifles to the double barrel shotguns listed below. That P. Mullin and the William Schaefer and super rare American side-by-sides, and from I’ve heard, the Schaefer is superb.

New York Underlever 12g Double Hammergun By Patrick Mullin

New York Underlever 12g Double Hammergun By Patrick Mullin

Lot 245: New York Underlever 12g Double Hammergun By Patrick Mullin: Serial #1, 12 ga., 28″ barrels with bright very good bores which show some scattered light pitting, a spot or two which might be slightly more moderate. The barrels show lovely plum and gray contrasting damascus pattern their full-length, appearing to have been very nicely, very professionally re-struck. The concave rib is marked “P. Mullin New York” and the breeches show very light geometric engraving. The frame is primarily a dark plum brown and speckled case-hardened patina with some generous colors atop the short tang. There are graceful chiseled “cap deflecting” contours behind each fence and the hammers retain their cap deflecting ridges at their leading edges. The lockplates are unembellished and show some silvery speckled and gray case-hardening with the right lock more of a pewter, the left more of a blue-gray with colors in the areas of the hammers. The straight grip English walnut buttstock rates very good plus showing nice grain figure but with some added finish, also retaining a few sparse minor dings and dents from the years. It is checkered slightly coarsely in a wrap-over pattern and there is an un-engraved shield-shaped silver monogram plate atop the wrist. The forend is in a similar state of condition and is near overall checkered and features a nice horn tip insert. Likely a very late shotgun, nearly all of Mullin’s forearms are retained by wedge and tenons while this example is a lever-release. Twelve gauge guns by Mullin are actually very rare as he was known for making large-bore fowling pieces. Most of his guns are 10 and 8 bore, with some 4 bore guns known. The barrels fit ever-so-slightly loose with the lever at the end of its travel and the locks are crisp and mechanically functional and are non-rebounding. A very nice example overall from this prolific New York maker of big bore single and double barrel fowling pieces. Estimate $1500-$2500

Lot 249: Wonderful 12g William Schaefer Boston Top Lever Double Hammergun:

Lot 249: Wonderful 12g William Schaefer Boston Top Lever Double Hammergun:

Lot 249: Wonderful 12g William Schaefer Boston Top Lever Double Hammergun: Serial #2, 12 ga., 28″ barrels with .004″ constriction in each tube and with excellent bores. This shotgun is marked on each lock “W.R. SCHAEFER” and the top rib is engraved “W.R. SCHAEFER BOSTON MASS.”. This shotgun shows fabulous workmanship and remains in fabulous original condition. The barrel flats and watertable both show a single “2” and the barrels and action show no proofs of any kind; the barrel shows the initials “W.K.S. just ahead of flats. The shotgun features beautifully executed raised ridges on the fences around the firing pins. The only engraving is a small wedge on the rib at breech and a nice border around the breeches. The forend tip is of iron and beautifully formed as are the perfectly fit toe and heel buttplate. The barrels retain about 90 – 95% evenly thinning original damascus pattern. The action, locks and hammers show about 90% original color case-hardened finish faded to a pewter gray on the belly but showing nice contrast on the locks. The top lever is finished in blue, the triggerguard in color case hardening which is faded to gray. The checkered straight grip buttstock and forend are of beautifully figured walnut and rate excellent with 90% plus original finish remaining and with sharp checkering. The stock features dropper points and a beautiful iron toe and heel buttplate with smooth center and a gold monogram plate on top of wrist which is engraved with fancy monogram. The forend is checkered in a fancy pattern and is wedge fastened with the head of the wedge fitting flush into a recess in the escutcheon. All screws remain properly indexed. This is a very fine Boston double with lovely little details which showcase the pride that this highly talented maker took in his work. Estimate $2000-$3000.

Lot 281: Parker 28g Vh Grade Boxlock Double Shotgun

Lot 281: Parker 28g Vh Grade Boxlock Double Shotgun

Lot 281: Parker 28g Vh Grade Boxlock Double Shotgun: Serial #128240, 28 ga. on No. 0 frame, 24″ barrels choked cylinder and improved modified with bright excellent bores. This is a rare little Parker, one of only 38 original V grade guns with 24″ barrels. The barrels retain about 90% evenly thinning original blue finish. The action is mostly a silver gray patina with bright color under top lever. The walnut stocks appear to factory Remington replacements, the buttstock is excellent and fits beautifully, the forend is not quite as nice. The forend checkering pattern is a little different than factory and the buttstock has a “REMINGTON” marked gripcap. The stock has a 14 7/8″ length of pull over a Redhead pad with outward rake at the toe and drops of 1 3/4″ and 2 3/4″. This is a rare little smallbore Parker that should be fun to hunt. Estimate $6000-$8000.

Lot 390: Rare Hoffman Arms Company Double Ejectorgun

Lot 390: Rare Hoffman Arms Company Double Ejectorgun

Lot 390: Rare 12g Hoffman Arms Company Double Ejectorgun: Serial #98598, 12 ga., 29″ fluid steel barrels both choked a light full with bright excellent bores. The barrels retain about 80% original blue, the loss is some even light fading and toning with the some wear along the lower right edge of the right tube where it looks as though there was some light surface oxidation which was removed with steel wool. The right barrel is engraved “Made by Hoffman Arms Co No. 482″ with the left tube engraved “Ardmore Okla 12 ga.”, there is light engraving at the breeches and on the rib extension; there is no wall thickness noted below .035″, closer to .040″ over most surfaces. The barrels exhibit British nitro proofs for 1 1/8 ounce loads and are equipped with dual beads. The frame shows very nice vivid color case-hardening, toning only on the edges of the fences and the rounded portions of the belly. The gun features nice loose flowing scroll with foliate decoration on the belly of the frame. The right and left flats show pheasant and hunting dog motifs, the fences with foliate decoration, nicely matted along the top of the frame. Additionally the top lever shows some nice scroll and geometric decoration with a very nice scroll on the bow of the guard. The straight grip English walnut stock rates very good plus to excellent with minor dings and handling marks from the years. The checkering is nice with mullered borders and there are dropper points at the rear of the stock cheeks. The splinter style forend is in a similar state of condition with its hardware still exhibiting very nice color case-hardening. The length of pull to the Hawkins recoil pad is 13 1/2″ with drops of 1 1/2″ and 2″; the lower left and right leading edges of the stock show repaired chips, the left side appears to have the original chip re-affixed, the right side has had a piece very nicely spliced in. Lockup is tight with the top lever still slightly right of center and the gun seems to operate properly, the ejectors fitted very tightly to one another, occasionally one dragging the other up with it slightly upon ejection, it does not kick the shell out of the unfired barrel however; if the two are fired simultaneously they kick the shells robustly. Really a very lovely example overall in a very fine state of condition, Hoffman shotguns very rarely encountered. Estimate $3000-$5000.

Lot 575: 20g Beretta Asel Model Over Under Shotgun

Lot 575: 20g Beretta Asel Model Over Under Shotgun

Lot 575: 20g Beretta Asel Model Over Under Shotgun: Serial #27653, 20 Ga, 27 1/2″ ventilated rib barrels choked modified over improved with bright excellent bores. The metal surfaces retain 95-97% original blue finish on the barrels, lever, triggerguard and lower tang with some light loss at the carry point; the coin finished scalloped frame rates very good to near excellent displaying moderate engraving around the edges with some faint tarnishing present in a few areas. The checkered straight grip walnut buttstock and forend rate good to near very good with several dings and handling marks present as well as some added finish; a Pachmayr White Line rubber recoil pad has been outfitted with the length of pull measuring out to 14 1/2″. A fine Beretta ASEL over under shotgun that would perform well afield. Estimate $1500-$2500.
