Winchester/Parker Reproduction A-1 Special 2 Barrel Set 20 Gauge

Here’s another hard Parker Repro to find. This little double barrel is an20 gauge A-1 Special with 26″ and 28″ barrels. These Repros came in two models: ones with standard engraving and ones with custom engraving patterns. Even though the photos are crappy, I think this one features standard engraving

20 Gauge ZANOTTI MODEL 625 Double Barrel Shotgun, 28" barrels

20 Gauge ZANOTTI MODEL 625 Double Barrel Shotgun, 28″ barrels

Here’s an impressive double barrel shotgun from a maker I know little about. It’s a 20 gauge Zanotti and looks like it’s in nice shape. I love the color-case hardening, the engraving, and the rounded, scalloped action. It makes this SxS look 50% Italian and 50% Westley Richards.

I think Zanotti is owned by Stefano and Fabio Zanotti. According to this website, they are members of the oldest shotgun-making family in the world. The Zanottis have been making complete shotguns since 1625 – longer than Beretta – and the company has been in family hands the entire time. They’ve built guns for lots of famous clients, including an O/U for Fidel Castro and this pair of sidelock 12 gauges for FDR, JR.

ZANOTTI MODEL 625 20GA: SIDE BY SIDE DOUBLE WITH 28″ BARRELS , 3″ CHAMBERS, FINE CHECKERED WALNUT STOCK AND FOREND AND FINE ENGRAVING ON OIL CASE COLORED RECEIVER. 95% EXCELLENT FACTORY FINISH WITH ONLY SLIGHT HANDLING and LEATHER RECOIL PAD. 14 3/4″ LOP TO FRONT AND 13 3/4″ LOP TO REAR TRIGGER. BARRELS ARE MARKED “ZANOTTI GARDONE ITALY” AND “NEW ENGLAND ARMS KITTERY POINT MAINE”. Price: $3,250

J. P. Sauer Model 45, box lock, 20ga., 26” barrels

J. P. Sauer Model 45, box lock, 20ga., 26” barrels

Here’s a beautiful little double I know very little about. J. P. Sauer is one of Europe’s oldest gunmakers, and I’m guessing they made this side-by-side for the American market. It sure looks awesome. It’s on Gunbroker.com with a Buy Now price of $16,995 – expensive, but not crazy considering the gun’s quality, condition, and scarcity.

J. P.  Sauer Model 45, box lock, 20ga., 26” barrels: Unbelievable, Grade 45, made in September 1928. Krupp barrel, deep sculptured breeches, side clip, hidden greener, 3rd fastener, fire blued cocking indicator, intercepting sears, hinged front trigger, ebony horn tipped forend with ebony insert behind the very delicately carved and checkered side panels. Semi-pistol grip, horn butt plate, engraved bands at muzzle. Receiver is 100% profusely scroll engraved with 5 highly detailed pheasants on left side and 4 ducks in flight on right side. The bottom of the frame has 2 setters and 2 birds flushing and the balance of it is completely covered in scroll, all interwoven. Perfect untouched screws. 98% color case hardening, scalloped and rebated frame. All of its original wood finish with minor handling marks, but not refinished. This is a very small, lightweight, pre-war gun that is virtually never seen, and possibly the best example of its kind. The quality of workmanship and condition of this gun makes it the very best available. 5lb. 10oz.  14 1/8” x 1 3/8” x 2 1/8”

20 gauge FAIR/NEA Model 500 O/U.

20 gauge FAIR/NEA Model 500 O/U.

If you’re looking for a decent upland gun, you should take a look at this FAIR/NEA Model 500 O/U. It appears to be in excellent, original condition, and at $1,429.99 , it’s a good deal.

FAIR is an acronym for Fabbrica Armi Isidoro Rizzini, an Italian maker who has been around since 1971. NEA was the notorious New England Arms, the high-end gun dealer known as “The Finest Gunshop in the World” and “The Most Dangerous Place to Buy a Double.” NEA worked with FAIR  in the late 1990s to develop a line of O/U shotguns for the US market. The Model 500 started out as the least expensive model in that line, but it was replaced a couple years later by the Model 400. There were also a couple upper-grade models – the Model 700 and the Model 900. Each model came in 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410.

All the FAIR/NEA over-unders were built on the reliable trigger-plate style actions featured on many modern Italian O/Us, and their single triggers were sound and dependable.

16 gauge D. M. Lefever 9F Double Barrel Shotgun

16 gauge D. M. Lefever 9F Double Barrel Shotgun

Here’s a super rare shotgun. According to the seller, it’s a 16 gauge D.M. Lefever 9F. The pics stink (and description is just as bad), so squint and take a good look. I’ll doubt you’ll see another one.

These guns were made by Daniel Myron Lefever after he left the Lefever Arms Co. I think they were made from about 1901-1905. I’ve seen a couple of them and they are unique guns. This is the only 16g I’ve come across.

This is all the seller is saying out it:

Lefever  16 ga   crossbolt  28″ Krupp  barrels:  9 F  Very pretty  looks like  either  stump  and tree fork walnut   ,only about 20  ever  made , in this grade . Price: $8,400

DUMOULIN 20 GAUGE EJECTOR - SCALLOPED ACTION WITH 4 BITES - 26 1/2" BARRELS:

DUMOULIN 20 GAUGE EJECTOR – SCALLOPED ACTION WITH 4 BITES – 26 1/2″ BARRELS:

A lot of guys like new shotguns. I’m not one of them. I prefer old doubles (and old stuff). That’s why I like this 20 gauge Dumoulin O/U caught my eye. It looks very original, and its straight grip, double triggers, and unique action give it a lot of character. I dig the three-piece forend, too. Some guys will say the 26 1/2″ bbls are too short, but I doubt they matter in the grouse woods.

There have been Dumoulins in the Belgian gun trade for centuries. Today there’s still a gunmaker in Herstal called Dumoulin. I think this shotgun was made by Fs. Dumoulin & Cie, or François Dumoulin & Company. Fs. Dumoulin was founded in 1849 and I think they had a factory in Liege into the 1950s. They made all sorts of guns: pistols, cheap rifles, high grade sidelock shotguns, etc.

Frank Pugliese was American gunmaker. He was around in the 1940-1950s, and I think he specialized in Springfield Sporters. It looks like he imported this shotgun as is, right from Belgium. I’m not sure how many shotguns Frank  Pugliese brought into the US, but here’s another one that has been on the market for a while.

DUMOULIN 20 GAUGE EJECTOR – SCALLOPED ACTION WITH 4 BITES – 26 1/2″ BARRELS: Here is a Dumoulin 20 gauge ejector made in 1958. Scalloped action with good case color. Rose and scroll engraving. Straight grip with long trigger tang. Double underbite with two extra fasteners on top barrel – very strong indeed. Dumoulin “D over Crown” makers stamp. Barrels are 26 1/2″. Bottom bore is .625 with 10/1000 choke (IC) while top bore is also .625 with 25/1000 choke (Imp Mod). Chambers are 2 3/4″. This high quality Belgian double was imported by Gunsmith/Gunmaker Frank Pugliese and has his name on the top barrel. Three piece forend. Weight of gun is 6 LBS 4 1/2 OZ. LOP – 14 1/4″. Drop at Comb – 1 5/8″. Drop at Heel – 2 3/8″. Price: $2,250

Original label on the James Woodward & Sons oak & leather Over Under Shotgun Case

Own a best-quality British shotgun? Here’s the perfect place to store it. The rare James Woodward & Sons shotgun cases below are on Ebay now. Both are being offered at No Reserve.

Brady and other companies in the UK built cases like these for Woodward, Westley Richards, Purdey, and other makers. When a customer ordered a gun, the case was optional (so were the accessories). Most makers offered cases in different qualities. Oak & Leathers were the best, the most expensive, and the most durable. They were also the heaviest. The all-leather cases were rugged, but a bit smaller and several pounds lighter.

The cases you see here are in great shape, and because they include their original labels and some of their original Woodward accessories, both are incredible finds.

John Moses Browning was one of the most inventive minds in firearms. Born in 1855, he awarded his first patent at age 24. Between then and when he died in 1926, he designed and patented for everything from pistols and shotguns to rifles, machine guns, and cartridges. Mr Browning’s last design was for the famous Suporposed shotgun. Even though he passed away in 1926, his design was completed and introduced in 1931. The Superposed would go on to become one of the world’s great shotguns.

If you’re a collector, or if you would like to buy a classic shotgun that’s still basically brand-new, this is the one for you. Ithaca Grade 2 Flues 12ga SxS Pigeon Gun

Ithaca Grade 2 Flues 12ga SxS Pigeon Gun

I’ve seen a lot of Flues shotguns, but this is the first one I’ve seen like this. It’s a Grade 2 Ithaca Flues. The seller claims it’s a Pigeon Gun.

All I can say is “Perhaps”. With the its 32″ barrels, Full X Full chokes, and high, straight-gripped stock, I can’t imagine what else its owner was going to do with it – shoot ducks and geese? Maybe.

Ithaca’s Flues model SxS shotguns were introduced in 1908 and made until 1926. In all, about 223,000 of them were built – making the Flues one of the most popular double barrel shotguns ever made in America.

Here’s more about this 12 gauge from the seller:

Ithaca Grade 2 Flues 12ga Pigeon gun: 32″ Full & Full. Double triggers, Extractors. 40% cc. 85-90% blue. Straight grip. 14 1/8 LOP butt plate. 1 1/8 comb 2in heal. Excellent bores.  Price: $1,250

Fabio Zanotti 12 gauge Double Barrel Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns

Fabio Zanotti 12 gauge Double Barrel Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns

Style is something I want to see in a shotgun, especially in Best-quality doubles. I like to see a SxS or an O/U that has a distinct look, one that a maker has developed and made his own. This is one reason why I like Purdeys, Bosses, Hollands, and Woodwards. These makers created their own styles, and from the engraving patterns to the shape of the stocks and the profile of the actions and fences, their guns are distinct in many ways.

The guns you see here are also distinct. They were built in Italy by Fabio Zanotti, and even though they’re Holland & Holland-pattern sidelocks and they show a ton of British influence, they have a look that’s is all their own. Check out the shaping of the actions, the engraving, the lockplates, the bow of the triggerguard, and even the stocks. Very unique, and an indication of just how much attention went into making these fine guns. BTW: here’s a similar pair of 12g Zanotti boxlocks showing the same style. I think these guns are a great deal…

16g Parker DH with a straight grip and damascus barrels.

16g Parker DH with a straight grip and damascus barrels.

Here’s a shotgun I’ve always wanted: a 16g Parker DH with a straight grip and damascus barrels. This one popped up on Gunsinternational.com on Tuesday. I must of spent half an hour looking it over, examining the pics, reading the description, and wondering if I had finally found one of my dream guns.

At first glance, this one looks like a decent, pretty original double. It’s old (#82,242 – 1895), and a bit tired, and I doubt the checkered side panels are original. But the rest of the gun looks solid. Unfortunately, it sounds like the barrels are in poor shape and off the face. Those are deal killers for me, especially on a gun that cost $2899 (I think that was the asking price). I decided to pass. But I guess those warts were fine with someone else. The gun was marked SOLD by the end of the day.

Parker introduced their DH (D – or Grade 3- and H for hammerless) shotguns in 1888 and these side-by-sides went on to be the company’s most popular line of “fine guns”. The company made 16,398 of them, and each one was custom ordered.  According to The Parker Story, just 458 of those 16,398 DHs were 16 gauges with damascus barrels. Of those, maybe 10% were built with straight grips – and that’s a very optimistic maybe.

I saw a real nice 16g DHE with damascus barrels and a straight grip 3-4 years ago. The only problem was its 13 1/2″ LOP to a skeleton butt plate. Too short for me, and the gun was too much money to buy it and mess with. Oh well….

28 gauge Ruger Red Label Over-Under Double Barrel Shotgun

28 gauge Ruger Red Label Over-Under Double Barrel Shotgun

Here’s one of the nicest upland guns America has ever produced. The 28 gauge Ruger Red Label is light enough to lug around all day and handy enough to get the job done when a woodcock or grouse finally flies. And it’s not so expensive that you’ll cringe as you bash your way through an alder thicket or scrape the stock against a poplar tree

This one is one Gunbroker.com now, and the auction ends today, 6/10/2014, @ 9:00:00 PM ET. Here’s all the info about the gun from the seller:

Browning BSS Sidelock, 12 ga. Side by Side Shotgun:

Browning BSS Sidelock, 12 ga. Side by Side Shotgun

Here’s your chance to get a deal on a great double. This 12 gauge Browning BSS sidelock is on Gunrunnerauctions.com now. The listing ends tomorrow, 06/12/14 @ 19:00.

Browning had these sidelock BSSs made for them by Miroku from 1983-1987. Even though they were well made, they weren’t big sellers. Today, they have a bit of following among some very knowledgeable people like gunsmith James Flynn (find out why). Twelve-gauges with 28″ barrels usually sell for around $4500-$5000, (this one is $4999). So if  you can get this one for $3500 or less, you’ll get a good deal.

Browning BSS Sidelock, 12 ga. Side by Side Shotgun:  Serial #01001PW918, mfg. 1984 in Japan by Miroku. Excellent, like new condition. Perhaps test-fired – action is very tight and no apparent wear. Super nice and clean! Hard to find item that was only produced for a few years by Browning. Long discontinued (since 1988) and long mourned, these Sidelocks represented the best Browning side by sides and were a whole different upgraded animal when compared to the Grade One box-lock BSS’s as they had a straight grip English walnut upgraded stock with hand checkering, coin-finished engraved sideplates/all metal frame areas, checkered butts, double triggers and ejectors. This specimen is a dandy deluxe with nicely figured wood (one tiny impression on right side), 28″ solid rib barrel, M/F fixed chokes and steel front bead. Profusely scroll engraved on all three receiver sides, triggerguard, top lever and top tang – very pleasing looking. Splinter forearm with hand checkering. All matching iron. 2 3/4″ chambers. Bright bores. Fitted in a Browning brown hard case with brown interior – just one small tear on the top lid for wear.

Lefever HE 16E gauge Side-by-Side Shotgun

Lefever HE 16E gauge Side-by-Side Shotgun

I used to be hot for Lefevers – especially ones in 16 gauge.  I owned three F-grades 16s at one point, including one that was practically new.

These days, my passion for Uncle Dan’s doubles has cooled a bit. But I have to say, the Lefever you see here does get my heart pumping. Its sleek looks reminds me why I fell in love with these guns. If the stock was a bit longer, I’d be on the phone right now trying to cut a deal.

Even though the doubles you see here don’t look related, they share a feature that makes them cousins, or maybe even step brothers.

This feature is the rotary-fastening top bolt. The rotary-fastening top bolt was invented by Alexander T. Brown in 1883. A year later it found its first use on the side-by-side shotguns made built by a company owned by Lyman Cornelius Smith. The guns built by A.H Fox used a similar rotary-fastening top bolt, although the rest of Ansley’s shotguns are much different.

I’ve always like L.C. Smiths. I think they’re  just as nice as Foxes — especially LCs like the 16 gauge below.

LC Smith 16 GA, grade 2E SxS Shotgun

LC Smith 16 GA, grade 2E SxS Shotgun

LC Smith 16 GA, grade 2E SxS Shotgun: 28″ barrels that are choked full right and full left. Both bores are .661. Barrels are 80-85% original blue. Checkering is sharp and un-damaged. Engraving is sharp and clear, original case color remains at about 20% or so. The gun has great ejectors. Capped pistol grip stock with splinter fore-end. LOP is 14 1/2″ to a 1-1/4″ Whiteline pad. DAC 1 3/4, DAH 2 1/2. It has a 3 position safety. Manufactured in 1906. Price: $2,950

This 20g Fox CE is a hard gun to find. Fox made just 413 C-grades in 20 gauge. The first one (CE #200,011) left the factory on September 17, 1912 . This one was built 11 years later in 1923. While its price seems high, it’s not crazy. A minty, original one  like this is worth $18,000+.

A.H. Fox CE Grade 20ga Double Barrel Shotgun

A.H. Fox CE Grade 20ga Double Barrel Shotgun

A.H. Fox CE Grade 20ga Double Barrel Shotgun: 26″ barrels with Improved Cylinder & Modified chokes. Ejectors, single trigger, 14-3/8″ LOP, 5-3/4 pounds. Serial number 202010, 85% original barrel blue, outstanding wood & receiver with crisp engraving. Tight action, mint bores, a very nice high grade Fox 20ga. Price $11,950
